Yesterday, the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), the leading human rights organization for all individuals with Down syndrome, became aware of a situation that occurred on a United flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Washington Dulles International Airport involving an individual with Down syndrome. We immediately reached out to the Cross family and were informed of the situation that occurred on Sunday, October 15, 2017.

A joint letter from both NDSS President Sara Hart Weir and Brenda Cross, Sean’s mother, has been sent to Mr. Munoz, the Chief Executive Officer of United Airlines.

We ask that United Airlines issue the Cross family a formal apology and take this opportunity to discuss how we incorporate disability awareness, sensitivity curriculum, and training tools on how to interact with an individual with Down syndrome or any other intellectual disability.
