NDSS 2019 New York City Buddy Walk

Published on

Saturday, September 14th we had our New York City Buddy Walk. I got into New York City Friday morning the day before the walk.  That day we got to meet the families beforehand as we gave out their packets of information, shirts for the walk, and information about the sponsors. When the families registered for the walk, some registered independently, and others registered as a team. Personally, I really liked all the different team names.

I was asked to attend a reception at The One World Observatory that Friday night to meet and greet the families who were attending the walk the next day. It was a networking event where we got to talk to so many people. It was great night and the view was spectacular!

We started off the walk morning in Times Square where we have the jumbo screen to show an hour-long video highlighting our friends with Down Syndrome and showcasing their talents. From there the buses were ready to take us over to Central Park where our walk took place.

To get ready for the walk we stretched out to some Zumba dancing. It was a good workout. Following the stretch out was a dance party that I was able to help lead. The Introductions of our sponsors, Gillette TREO, and Voya began, they spoke of what their companies do and their impact on those of us that are differently abled. We had many great sponsors.  Following the speeches the two families of the Grand Marshall’s took the stage and spoke on how they came to be involved in the Down Syndrome community and then they led the walk holding the banner. I was asked by one of the families to walk with them. That was cool!

As always it was just a great day meeting so many families, hoping in some little way I can or have helped their loved one with Down syndrome.
