The National Down Syndrome Society, the leading human rights organization for all individuals with Down syndrome, was saddened to hear of the allegations that a special education teacher in Florida flipped the desk of a non-verbal student with Down syndrome while she was sitting in it. We thank the Escambia County School District for suspending the teacher while investigations take place and the fellow education professionals who reported this unacceptable behavior.

NDSS has fought and will fight for equal rights in education for individuals with Down syndrome. An inclusive and safe educational environment is vital for our community to become valued members in their communities, allow them to be self-sufficient and partake in meaningful careers. The National Down Syndrome Society will continue to work with educators to ensure that all individuals with Down syndrome are welcomed in their schools.
