The key NDSS initiative to raise expectations and improve outcomes for education in kindergarten through 12th grade is to ensure implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL is an educational framework that provides flexibility in the ways information is presented, in the ways students respond or demonstrate knowledge and skills, and in the ways students are engaged. It also reduces barriers in instruction, provides appropriate accommodations, supports, and challenges, and maintains high achievement expectations for all students. When UDL is properly implemented, goals, instructional materials, teaching methods and assessments are designed from the outset to be accessible to all students.
