NDSS Your Way Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone join the NDSS Your Way program?

Yes, anyone can join in the fun-raising. Each fundraiser is required to accept the terms and conditions of the program, which is presented in an eWaiver at the time of registration. If you are under the age of 15, we suggest you have a parent or guardian review your campaign before going live with it.

Can I plan a fundraiser without being a part of the NDSS Your Way program?

Yes, of course! People all over the world work on fundraising events with NDSS that do not have an online component. Although we recommend NDSS Your Way first and foremost because soliciting and tracking donors is easier for everyone this way, it is not for everyone.

Alternatives to NDSS Your Way are to work independently and when you send your donation to NDSS, just let us know who to acknowledge for it. Or, if your event or campaign involves the use of the NDSS logo or you need additional support from us, we ask that you download and send back the NDSS Fundraiser Agreement Form.

Is there a fee or fundraising requirement associated with NDSS Your Way?

There is no registration fee or fundraising requirement. We suggest you set a realistic goal for yourself and increase your goal each time you meet it. NDSS is appreciative of all donations and no efforts go unnoticed by us.

Where do the funds I raise go?

The donations made via the NDSS Your Way program directly support the work of the National Down Syndrome Society. Please check out www.ndss.org to read extensively about our programs and goals, but if you are looking for some basic points to share with friends and family, here is a fine-tuned elevator pitch:

The National Down Syndrome Society works to create a culture that fully accepts and includes the more than 400,000 Americans with Down syndrome. As the national advocate for people with Down syndrome, NDSS’ goal is to ensure that individuals with Down syndrome are fully participating members of our communities. To this end, NDSS focuses on four areas of programming:

  • The National Policy Center creates systemic change through legislative advocacy
  • The National Buddy Walk® program honors and celebrates individuals in their communities
  • Public Awareness Initiatives bring new and positive presentations of Down syndrome to the public
  • Community Support Programs provide comprehensive and accurate information and resources on Down syndrome

The National Down Syndrome Society envisions a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations, and become valued members of welcoming communities.

Donations made to the NDSS Your Way program will help NDSS achieve its goals and further its mission.

Can I choose to direct funds from my event to an organization other than NDSS?

If your personal goal includes supporting a local or specific initiative that is not a part of NDSS, we encourage you to fundraise separately for that program.  NDSS Your Way is not set up to redistribute donations to other groups.

If your campaign supports multiple groups, we ask that you mention NDSS as one of the beneficiaries.  It is up to you if you’d like to include the NDSS logo and mission.

If you would like to use the general NDSS logo, email us at [email protected] with “logo request” in the subject line. You will get a response from Madeline Alemar.

Can I join a pre-existing event and/or can someone join my fundraising efforts?

Right now, NDSS Your Way is set up as an individual pursuit rather than a team effort like a Buddy Walk®. The best approach to joint fundraising is to create one page for an entire family, group of friends or department (corporate) and provide login information for the page to more than one person. The Fundraiser Headquarters (HQ) section will keep track of all solicitations and donations, but credit card information is kept secure by Classy.

Can I keep my fundraising web page available after my event/campaign is over?

Yes, your personal url is available for as long as you’d like to keep it active.  The image and text are customizable, so you can update the page each time you solicit support. For example, if you are working in a NDSS Celebrations page, you can create it in honor of a birthday and then update it for Down Syndrome Awareness Month without changing your login information.

Who can I contact in the NDSS office for help with fundraising?

Email us at [email protected] with “fundraising help” in the subject line. You will get a response from Madeline Alemar. Or, call the NDSS office at 800-221-4602 and ask to speak with someone about NDSS Your Way.

If your question is specifically about uploading a photo, we suggest “resizing” your photo using a picture manager. The image size will be shown when you attempt to download and the picture manager will allow you to adjust as needed.

Can I raise money off-line and include it with my online fundraising total?

Yes! Of course! We encourage you to solicit donations off-line because many people are not web savvy or credit card donors. You can send a check to the NDSS office. Donations entered by the NDSS office will be credited as “off-line” and will appear on your donor list as such.

If you host an event where a majority of funds raised are in the form of cash, we highly recommend depositing the money and either making out a check or money order for that same amount or making a credit card donation to your page. In this case, we will not be able to track the individual names of your donors, and therefore, we cannot issue tax receipts unless you provide supplemental detail about the donors and their contribution.

Do you have information about Down syndrome available for my event?

Any fundraiser willing to give or get a minimum of $100 towards their goal is welcome to request up to 50 informational brochures about Down syndrome and NDSS.

For those seeking a basic fact sheet that can be printed on demand, this is available. It prints well in color or black and white.

Email us at [email protected] with “request for brochures” in the subject line.

Do you have merchandise available for my event?

NDSS has several exclusive and preferred vendors for a variety of products.  Right now we do not have any NDSS Your Way merchandise created, but we can email you the logo in any format you need if you’d like to include it on apparel or printed materials.  Please send your email to [email protected] with “logo request” in the subject line.
