Self-advocates play an important role in the work and operation of NDSS. Self-advocates testify on important policy issues, serve on the National Board of Directors and the Self-Advocate Advisory Board, and act as Goodwill Ambassador.
NDSS incorporates self-advocates in leadership positions, serving in a number of capacities.
The Dan Piper Award an honor presented annually at the New York City Buddy Walk® to an outstanding self-advocate.
The O'Neill Tabani Enrichment Fund is a postsecondary education grant awarded by NDSS to students with Down syndrome.
