Love: I Just Do
Love: I Just Do

I am a senior in high school and have been bullied all my life. This caused me to be withdrawn and defensive, but Lizzie - a girl I grew up with who has Down syndrome - has suffered worse than anyone I've ever met. People are down right cruel to her. One day I intervened as a bully was calling Lizzie names, she smiled at him, hugged him and said "Have a nice day!" in her sweet, peppy voice. I was stunned. No tears. No anger. Just kindness. When I asked Lizzie why she was so nice to him she said: "I just love him." Again I was stunned. "Why?" I couldn't even love myself after all that I had been bullied, but not Lizzie. She hugged herself tightly, and with a big grin said: "I just do." Lizzie sees the good in the world, and she inspires me to do the same.
