Vague Memories - Life and art work of Kasia Puciata 1961-2004

Sister about Sister: "It is not the length of life, but the depth of life." -Ralph Waldo Emerson. My Big Sister Kasia was born with Down syndrome in 1961, in a country and culture not well prepared to handle what they thought were abnormalities. Some were ashamed to have us over, some clearly requested Kasia stayed at home, others advised putting her in a foster home, as not to ruin family's good image. People, especially children, would pause and stare making a circus for themselves. It was rough and painful for my sister, who would come home and look at herself in the mirror asking why was she different and was she beautiful? We'd always laugh and say she was too beautiful for others to handle. She'd then reach out for Nivea cream and smudge it over her face to ensure that beauty... For the rest of the story and to view the collection of my sister's paintings, please refer to the website I created in her memory - www.vaguememories.com. It is a touching and inspiring story, which shows that through unconditional love one can achieve the unthinkable!

This is not only a great story by sister about sister, but also a great way to remember Kasia. I remember Kasia, I also remember her dedication to painting. I remember the first exhibit in Chicago. Hope others will be able to see these wonderful paintings

I have heard so many of these types of stories. I worked for special education administrators and teacher consultants. They are the salt of the earth. But most of all, the children receiving special education are the definite gems.

Incredible depth of Kasia\'s paintings leads my feelings inside her soul. There seem to be an untachable connection between my own self (the viewer) and Kasia\'s vision of the world greater then what we normally can see.

Kasia was my friend. Somettimes, she would call me and ask my address. She visited only a couple of times but her presence is always with me through her art. Art of a beautiful heart and a deep understanding the nature of painting.

I applaud your work; admire your talent….your writing took me back to my bellowed neiberhood, and it is such a comforting feeling knowing after all these years I am not the only one remembering it THAT way. Kasia is proud of you! Congratulations
