Two Peas in a Pod
Two Peas in a Pod

Our daughter Riley was born March 14, 2008 and was a beautiful five pound bundle of joy. We did not know she had Down syndrome until she was born. It was a shock at first, but after doing some research we decided we would not limit her in life. She was not much different from other children, some things just took her a little longer to grasp.

She started physical therapy when she was six months old. After that came occupational, developmental, and speech therapies. With her wonderful group of therapists Riley met all of her milestones. She was delayed but she met them when she was good and ready. Now Riley is close to five and is in preschool with some kids who need special help and others who don't.

Last December Riley met the biggest change in her life so far, a little 8 pound 3 ounce baby brother she likes to call “Bubba.” After being the only child for almost four years Riley had to start sharing our attention. We were afraid of how Riley would react to sharing, and it turns out we had no reason to be scared. Riley loves her brother more than mommy and daddy sometimes! She helps with feeding him, changing him, bathing him, and putting him night night. The two are at times not so friendly playing in front of us, but when they are alone they are two peas in a pod. She protects him from things she knows will hurt him and he gives her giggly laughter in return.

Riley has made amazing progress in the few years of her life so far and we know she will continue that progress throughout her life. There is no limit to what she can do and she has a huge loving family that is here to support her along the way. I have never been so blessed in life as I was the day she was born. She changed our lives in a way I would never have thought possible. I believe parents of a child with Down syndrome are the luckiest parents of all.
