Our Gift From God Named David
Our Gift From God Named David

We were a full and happy family of 4, and it grew much more with our gift named David. I found out I was pregnant with him in 2006. I didn't get the blood test to find out if there were any issues, because I was only 24 years old. The pregnancy had only a few problems. I found out he was breech at 36 weeks, David had to be turned which hurt worse than labor. While he was being born at 38 weeks we found out that the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck twice. The doctors did a great job unwrapping it. He had to stay in the NICU for a week due to his blood being too thick. When he was born we found out he had Down syndrome. We were so scared because we didn't know anything about it. Once we had more information we felt better. We found out that is wasn't hereditary and that he is high functioning. He hated to be touched in any way after we brought him home from the hospital as a mother that was so frustrating. We would give him massages until he would finally be able to be touched without getting upset. He didn't really talk until he was closer to 3 years old. We are still working on eating certain textured foods. We found out early on how strong he was. We had to work with him to get his muscles toned. Shortly after he was born my husband quit smoking cold turkey he had been smoking for quite some time, and because of that he feels much better. We treat him just like all the others. We haven't told his two older boys, they know that there is something special about him and that is all. They understand that he needs extra help with things. He enjoys playing with other children. He is a wonderfully smart little boy. He is so curious too, although his stubbornness can get the best of him. He has a way to make us laugh. He has a 2 year old cousin that he spends a lot of time with, they both rub on to each other. He is in 3 year old preschool and doing a wonderful job. He just turned 4 years old and is the joy of the family.
