Lucas Singer: Coolest Brother Around

Never in a million years did my parents think that they would have twins, let alone a child with Down syndrome. Lucas was born 30 minutes before myself, and he will never let me forget it. There was a period of time in my life when having a brother with special needs felt like the end of the world. In middle school especially, I was embarrassed and ashamed that my family was different. As I matured and met more of my peers, siblings of individuals with Down syndrome, I began to finally see Lucas as a blessing to my family and not a curse. He was always my brother, and I loved him as my brother, but he evolved into my inspiration and my motivation. People with Down syndrome have so much to teach us. Lucas entered this world fearlessly, and he lives his life to the fullest. He will not accept that he is different in any negative way. Lucas loves and accepts unconditionally, and this world would be such a better place if we all embraced this perspective. Not only is he my role model, Lucas shows me up all the time! He has held more jobs than I have in our 19 years. From manager of the high school football team, to a part time employee at the police station, Lucas leaves no day of the week un…well, busy! His self -advocacy sets a wonderful example for his peers with Down syndrome, and our relationship has evolved in such a positive way because of his attitude. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still my brother and a definite pain sometimes, but I would not trade my experiences for the world. Lucas has made me who I am, and will continue to shape the person I strive to be.
