Heidi Jean
Heidi Jean

In March of 2009, my husband and I were blessed with Heidi Jean. We knew before she was born that she would be very likely to have Down syndrome. We had had extra ultrasounds because of a congenital heart defect, and these ultrasounds showed other markers for Down syndrome. We were terrified! We were worried about her heart and because neither of us had ever met anyone with Down syndrome before. After Heidi was born (and her heart repaired), all of our fears went away, just like that. We had a beautiful baby. Even back then, Heidi could fill a room with her contagious personality. Now, at four years old, she has a way with people that is incomparable to anyone else I've ever met. She instinctively knows how people want to be treated, and what people need, when they are upset or need a hug, or especially a laugh. She makes me laugh every day! Yes, when we go places, lots of people do look at Heidi, but even if they initially look at her because she looks different, they keep looking because it is impossible not to feel happiness when you see her. She really does leave smiles behind her wherever she goes. Heidi is my living, breathing, sunshine, and I wouldn't have her any other way.
