God Doesn't Make Mistakes

August 29, 2011 was one of the happiest and most terrifying days of my life. Our son Stetson Landyn was born. He was a beautiful 8 pound baby boy, and we were all in love with him from the beginning. About 5 hours after he was born a pediatrician came to our room to tell us she had bad news. She said our beautiful baby was having trouble breathing, she believed he had Down syndrome, and she was having him air lifted to Arkansas Children's Hospital. We were devastated, terrified, and heartbroken. We had no idea anything was wrong. All the prenatal tests had come back normal. I was 29 years old, didn't have any risk factors and had a perfect pregnancy. As my husband said, we went from to highest of highs to the lowest of lows in a split second. We went to the nursery to be with him until the helicopter got there to get him. Daddy was allowed to fly with him and I am eternally grateful for that blessing because we are discovering that rarely happens. After the initial shock and devastation the news kept being better and better. He didn't have any heart defects or health problems that are more common in a baby with Down syndrome. He was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension but after two weeks in the NICU it corrected itself and won't ever return. He is perfectly healthy now and doing wonderfully. We are determined that he won't be treated differently than our older children or any other children. He has early intervention services and therapy and surprises his therapists with his abilities. We have wonderfully supporting friends and family. One person told me they were sorry when they heard the news and my reply was I'm not sorry. God doesn't make mistakes. He's just Stetson and is just what he is supposed to be. He is a beautiful boy with a contagious smile and laugh and who loves to give sugars and loves ice cream. He has brought our family so much closer together and has taught us to not sweat the small stuff and to appreciate each day, each achievement, each milestone, each blessing from God. To quote a song "Maybe it didn't turn out like I planned... all the doors I had to close, all the things I knew but I didn't know, thank God for all I missed 'cause it lead me here to this."
