We knew in our hearts that we wanted to adopt another child with Down syndrome. There was no explanation for this feeling, except love. Our daughter whom we adopted first had so filled our hearts and our lives with joy and love that we could do nothing else, save adopt another child who also had Down syndrome. Waiting is ever so hard, but soon the phone call came. Robin Steele from the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network, called me to let me know a birth mother would be contacting me regarding the possible adoption of her infant with Down syndrome. I spoke with my son Neko's birth mother, and it was clear as she shared that this was my child. He was the one I had been dreaming about, longing for. As soon as arrangements could be made, I flew to San Diego to bring my son home. When I laid eyes on him, my heart stopped beating for a moment. He was perfect and beautiful and I was his momma. He cried when removed from the car seat, but quieted again and settled against my chest throughout the plane ride home. To try to describe Neko and how he has affected our lives is nearly impossible. We are all so in love with him and delighted with his charismatic personality. We adore the way he blows kisses, waves to perfect strangers in the store, and the precious hugs he gives to his best friends who are also his siblings make us smile. Everyone who meets him feels like they have made a forever friend. He is beloved by all who know him, simply because He loves everyone he meets. He is changing the way people see Down syndrome because of that love. He has been the center of our lives and the king of our hearts since that first day he entered our family. We don't quite know what life would be like without our wonderful little boy brought to us through adoption! The National Down Syndrome Adoption Network exists to bring children like Neko and families like ours together, and we are eternally grateful for their part in making Neko's story a happily ever after.
