Adopting Neko

Adopting Neko

We knew in our hearts that we wanted to adopt another child with Down syndrome. There was no explanation for this feeling, except love. Our daughter whom we adopted first had so filled our hearts and our lives with joy and love that we could do nothing else, save adopt another child who also had Down syndrome. Waiting is ever so hard, but soon the phone call came. Robin Steele from the National Down Syndrome Adoption Network, called me to let me know a birth mother would be contacting me regarding the possible adoption of her infant with Down syndrome. I spoke with my son Neko's birth mother, and it was clear as she shared that this was my child. He was the one I had been dreaming about, longing for. As soon as arrangements could be made, I flew to San Diego to bring my son home. When I laid eyes on him, my heart stopped beating for a moment. He was perfect and beautiful and I was his momma. He cried when removed from the car seat, but quieted again and settled against my chest throughout the plane ride home. To try to describe Neko and how he has affected our lives is nearly impossible. We are all so in love with him and delighted with his charismatic personality. We adore the way he blows kisses, waves to perfect strangers in the store, and the precious hugs he gives to his best friends who are also his siblings make us smile. Everyone who meets him feels like they have made a forever friend. He is beloved by all who know him, simply because He loves everyone he meets. He is changing the way people see Down syndrome because of that love. He has been the center of our lives and the king of our hearts since that first day he entered our family. We don't quite know what life would be like without our wonderful little boy brought to us through adoption! The National Down Syndrome Adoption Network exists to bring children like Neko and families like ours together, and we are eternally grateful for their part in making Neko's story a happily ever after.

I wish I was younger, because a big part of me would love to adopt a child, and yes, I would want another child with DS. My son has taught us a love we would have never known. God bless this family and their beautiful children!!

There is nothing in life that prepares you to give a child up for adoption. The pain of the loss is a pain that you can't describe until you live it personally. But once that wave comes and goes an reveals the joy and the blessing that you have bestowed upon another family, well that kind of joy overshadows the sad moments and it makes you a better person each year that passes. Being Neko's birth mom has given my life more meaning and opened up my heart to a beautiful community of DS. I wouldn't be me without Neko and the Gouldings. Love you all.

This boy is amazing!!! He is such a joy to be around and always make you smile. Life is a big party to him. He also find everything to be interesting and is always finding something to laugh about. It is with all the pride and joy I have to say he is my brother. I love him dearly and can't wait to see him exceed in all that he does. When this story started to unfold, it looked as if it could be a sad one. Having known the birth Grandma for many years, it was so apparent the complete and utter joy this child would bring to her life. Enter--the JOY OF NEKO! Then not long after bestowed upon them --the loving Goulding Family. The answer to all our prayers! This story has become one of faith, love and complete happiness...A beautiful story for all.

Being the birth Grandmother to Neko, I just wanted to express the feelings of sadness at the thought of losing my Grandson to adoption, then being completely blessed finding out that the adoptive family wanted all of Neko's birth family to remain a part of his life. I not only get to be with Neko but I am now the adoptive Grandmother of 5 other children and one of those siblings also has Down Syndrome. Neko now has a sister that he can relate to and a huge family that loves and adores him. How could this adoption be anything but a huge Blessing for everyone and I'm thrilled and loving every minute of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Neko and Charity are truly the example of the "Upside of Down" (syndrome) xoxoxo Grandma D
