ONE VERRADO Interview for ABC
ONE VERRADO Interview for ABC

We so proud of our children and our school. The message the kids are trying to get through in the varsity cheer video that showcases Megan Squire, who happens to have Down syndrome, is what our school and community is all about. Our moto is "One Verrado". The school's principal, VP athletic director, teachers, coaches and parents have worked hard to incorporate this message through interaction, encouragement and example.  We all are involved in our children's lives. The teachers, coaches and parents come to games; our principal went to four different sporting events in one day. Megan's family is just one example of our exceptional community. Her dad teaches and coaches, her mom is actively involved in all events, her older sister went to state for cheer-leading. The Squires have told me several times, "it takes a community to raise a child". Including Megan, and treating her like any other student is not extraordinary at Verrado, but just what they do. Megan is extraordinary though, not because she happens to have a diagnosis of Down syndrome, but because of the example she is setting as a motivated hard working member of Verrado's Varsity Spirit-line! This year our tryouts for varsity cheer were super tough!  Many kids did not make the team and left crying. Megan worked for it and with the help and encouragement of her peers, family, school and the community she made the team. We all are so proud to have her out there cheering every game. She always ROCKS it with Spirit and hits her moves!  These girls work hard, and keep up grades. They had two practices in one day yesterday (hours long). Clay, who shot the video, and the broadcasting class he's in (again - excellent examples of Verrado students) were challenged to enter the Katy Perry 'Roar' Video contest. Clay wasn't looking to "show off the girl with Down syndrome", but he was inspired by Megan's hard work which he incorporated into a video using our high school motto. Bravo! I hope the story inspires and encourages people everywhere! I am so happy these are the next set of graduating students going out into the world! Let your children inspire you! One Verrado!
