My Daughter, Sara

My Daughter, Sara We recently had our daughter, Sara's, senior pictures taken (she is now 18). As her Mom, I was attempting to control every part of this process. What she would wear, that her makeup and hair be just perfect and I was even going to stay with Sara and the photographer while the pictures were being taken. Clearly, she was resisting and being the stubborn gal she can be, so I finally just let go and said to my self: She is 18, this is about her, let her figure it out and then I made a call to a friend to see if I could visit her while Sara and the photographer did their thing...this picture is the result. Sara never ceases to amaze us with what she is capable of doing--I just need to get out of her way!! She is a valued member of our church, family and community and has been involved in dance and swimming for many years. She is also captain of her unified cheer team, this year, at Bend Senior High in Bend, Oregon. She works from time to time in a clothing boutique for women. She looks forward to being part of a Transition Program, next year, which will involve taking a couple of classes at the Community College.

We have a beautiful 17 year old down syndrome daughter. We have been learning how to back off and allow her independence to come through. It's hard because we want so much to protect her from the ugliness that's in this world. But we know it's good for her. Your daughter is very beautiful and I am sure like ours, she brings you much joy and happiness.

Love your story! While it is so hard to let go as our daughters grow up- it truly is a testament that you have done a great job as a parent. You have given her the gift of self confidence and determination. Congratulations on finishing high school and all the best for her next adventures!
