The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) #DSWORKS® is a new
employment initiative whose goal is to educate the general public about how individuals with Down syndrome are employable individuals and should be included in all aspects of the work force; encourage corporations and businesses to invest in hiring people with Down syndrome; and increase the number of opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome to work in meaningful and competitive employment settings.
Blake Pyron, is only 20 years old, and is the youngest business owner in his town of Sanger, Texas, and happens to have Down syndrome. His journey to become a business owner started shortly after he graduated high school. Blake loved his job working at a barbecue restaurant, but it closed one month after his senior year ended. Blake, with the support of his loving and dedicated family, started his own business – Blake’s Snow Shack.
With the goal of supporting NDSS’ #DSWORKS® Campaign and to help other self-advocates pursue their dreams of entrepreneurship, Blake and his family have established the NDSS #DSWORKS® Blake Pyron Entrepreneurship Scholarship. At the Buddy Walk® on Washington, NDSS will award a scholarship to self-advocate to pursue their dreams and aspirations to start their own business.
