#DSVOTES®

Overview

ATTENTION SELF-ADVOCATES!

#DSVOTES® is the new initiative from the NDSS Self-Advocate Advisory Board (SAAB) to encourage political participation by all self-advocates (individuals with Down syndrome who advocate for themselves and others).

The NDSS Self-Advocate Advisory Board has developed a partnership with the national self-advocacy organization, Self-Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE) on the very important issue of voting. SABE’s National Technical Assistance Center for Voting and Cognitive Access helps protection and advocacy systems, election officials and people with disabilities to make voting accessible for all citizens. The Center is managed and operated by leaders in the self-advocacy movement.

Visit SABE's GoVoter! website for valuable resources on registering to vote, voting rights, voting machines, voter ID laws, voting stories, and voting and guardianship.

Voting Rights

Voting is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of American democracy. The U.S. Constitution and federal law ensures the right to vote for individuals with disabilities who understand what it means to vote.

Knowing the voting rights and various obstacles to voting for individuals with disabilities is the first step towards a more accessible and inclusive voting process, a civic duty shared by all Americans.
