About the NDSS Riggio Transition & Postsecondary Education Initiative

Beginning over a decade ago, widespread and increasing interest from individuals with Down syndrome and their families in postsecondary opportunities focused NDSS on the need to create more of these postsecondary programs with consistent focus on academic enrichment, employment training and skill development, social integration in college life and independent living training. Additionally, NDSS was acutely aware that the lack of postsecondary financial aid for individuals with intellectual disabilities was a significant obstacle and had to be addressed.  Thus, NDSS led an effort that resulted in changing federal law so that students with intellectual disabilities can receive federal financial aid grants and Work Study jobs. In order to receive financial aid, students must be in programs that are at least 50% inclusive.

The NDSS Riggio Transition and Postsecondary Education Initiative is driven by two key factors:

  • Studies have shown students with intellectual disabilities (including Down syndrome) who participate in postsecondary education are more likely to excel in academics, employment and life
  • Many children with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities are now being included K-12 and want to pursue postsecondary education like their peers and siblings

A cornerstone of the NDSS postsecondary program is the O’Neill Tabani Enrichment Fund, which provides financial assistance to young adults with Down syndrome who are 18 years old or older who wish to enroll in postsecondary programs or take enrichment classes that will help them to enhance life through employment, independent living skills, and life skills.
