Overview of Postsecondary Education for Students with Intellectual Disabilities

NDSS believes in the importance of expanding transition and postsecondary opportunities for people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. Increased levels of interest from individuals with Down syndrome across the country have reinforced the need and desire for these programs, and NDSS has assisted in the creation of many of the these postsecondary programs across the country. The NDSS work in the area of postsecondary education is supported through a generous grant received from Riggio Family, and is driven by two key factors:

  • Studies have shown students with intellectual disabilities (including Down syndrome) who participate in postsecondary education are more likely to excel in academics, employment and life
  • Many children with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities are now being included K-12 and want to pursue postsecondary education like their peers and siblings

A cornerstone of the NDSS postsecondary program is the O’Neill Tabani Enrichment Fund, which provides financial assistance to young adults with Down syndrome who are 18 years old or older who wish to enroll in postsecondary programs or take enrichment classes that will help them to enhance life through employment, independent living skills, and life skills.
