Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act

In December 2014, the landmark Stephen Beck Jr. Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act became law allowing people with disabilities to open tax-free savings accounts that do not jeopardize eligibility for critical government supports.

  1. Federal Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act

The Stephen Beck Jr. Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act (Public Law 113-295) was signed into law by President Obama on December 19, 2014. The ABLE Act amends the Internal Revenue Service Code of 1986 to create tax-free savings accounts for individuals with disabilities.

  2. Federal ABLE Improvement Bills

In March 2016, three new federal bills were introduced to improve upon the landmark Stephen Beck, Jr. Achieving a Better Life Experience Act (PL 113-295) that became law in December 2014.

  3. ABLE State Legislation and Implementation Updates

The federal Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act authorizes the states to develop their own ABLE programs and to offer ABLE accounts to qualified beneficiaries.

  4. State ABLE Programs

The first state ABLE programs were launched in June 2016. NDSS offers links to state ABLE programs and information to help potential ABLE account holders choose which program is best for them.
