Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome

Overview

Established in May 2015, the Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome, which is an expansion of the Congressional Down Syndrome Caucus originally formed in 2008, is made up of US Representatives and US Senators.  NDSS works with the Task Force to educate Members of Congress and their staff about Down syndrome, and to promote legislative activities and public policies that would enhance the quality of life for those with Down syndrome.

Activities

The Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome:

  • Holds informational events for Members of Congress and their staff to increase awareness about Down syndrome
  • Ensures Down syndrome is adequately addressed in all relevant legislation and regulations
  • Works with national and local Down syndrome groups to develop educational, medical and employment related initiatives that support and expand opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome
  • Identifies and works to remove barriers in the law for people with intellectual disabilities
  • Strives to build the Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome into a sustainable, dynamic political force and information clearinghouse by increasing membership and activities

Membership in the 115th Congress

Membership in the Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome does not carry over from one Congress to another. The 115th Congress began on January 3, 2017, and NDSS and our advocates have begun to seek Task Force members for the new Congress.

Take Action

If your Representative and Senators are not members of the Congressional Task Force on Down Syndrome, please contact them and ask them to join. Members of Congress who want to join should contact Megan Perez ([email protected]) in Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers' office and Kyle Christian ([email protected]) in Senator Jerry Moran's office.
