Director of Programs and Community Outreach

Position Summary

Reporting directly to the President, the Director of Programming & Community Outreach administers operations for community support, educational and informational services, overseeing all NDSS programming in the areas of education and self-advocacy, including: developing informative programing to address the needs of the Down syndrome community, creating resources for online and print, acting as NDSS representative on related committees and community projects, and expanding the organization’s reach by cultivating relationships within the community.

Job Responsibilities

  • Program management and development includes overseeing Information & Referral department that receives 8,000+ annual inquiries via hotline and email, serving as first responder to all crisis inquiries
  • Managing Information & Referral Specialist, Goodwill Ambassador/Office Assistant, volunteers with and without Down syndrome and in-office interns, leading our team to positive outcomes by identifying strengths, building on deficits and nurturing talents to maximize each individual’s contribution
  • Content creation including writing, editing and designing informational and educational resources for online, video and print media; including booklets, brochures, posters, lesson plans, articles and fact sheets
  • Act as resident expert on Down syndrome, training staff and volunteers to ensure consistency in delivery quality in the Information & Referral service areas
  • Develop content for and conduct monthly webinars and interactive in-person trainings
  • Oversee operation of annual college scholarship program for students with Down syndrome
  • Cultivate solid relationships within community to expand organization’s reach Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required, Masters in social work or equivalent field preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to deal with sensitive issues over the phone and in writing
  • Is comfortable working independently and collaborating cross-departmentally
  • Proven effective and creative management of diverse teams
  • Has an aptitude for critical thinking and problem solving

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, Masters in social work or equivalent field preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to deal with sensitive issues over the phone and in writing
  • Is comfortable working independently and collaborating cross-departmentally
  • Proven effective and creative management of diverse teams
