I hope all of you enjoyed your summer just like I did. I enjoyed being on the beach, watching summer concerts and going to see movies. Now it's September and it's time to get back to school. This is very important because education is important.

When I was growing up, my family taught me their version of "Family Intervention." Learning from my parents and my family was my first school. Everything I learned from them I took to school.

I went to three private boarding special education schools – the Kennedy Child Center in New York City, the Cardinal Cushing School in Hanover, MA, and Don Guanella School in Springfield, PA. While I was at Don Guanella there was no inclusion. I never gave up on learning all the subjects I took – language arts, history, reading, practical academics, circle discussion and speech therapy. I was even named Student of the Year. It made me feel great and I was honored.

My message is: if I can learn so can all of you. It's not about learning disability – it's about learning ability.
