The National Down Syndrome Society envisions a world where all people Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations and become valued members of welcoming communities. Today, more than ever, those in the Down syndrome community are contributing to society in ways that enhance the culture of their communities.
The comments Mr. Dawkins made saying that not aborting a child who has Down syndrome is “immoral” we find to be reprehensible and are outraged by his statement. People with Down syndrome are very positive and very important members of the community.
The comments made by Richard Dawkins are symbolic of a way of thinking that is not consistent with what we know about people living with Down syndrome. Today, people with Down syndrome are graduating from college, working in law offices and holding many other important jobs in the community. The comments made by Mr. Dawkins are troubling since people with Down syndrome have made great strides to be seen as equals to their peers and comments like this, while off-base, do not help the progress they have made.
We invite Mr. Dawkins to have an open conversation about the lives and the achievements currently happening in the Down syndrome community. We feel strongly that if he looks further into the community, he will see that people living with Down syndrome are very valued members of their community.
