National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) Statement on “Special Ed’s Brewery” Opening in Galt, California & Action Needed by the Down Syndrome Community
The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) is outraged by the opening of “Special Ed’s Brewery” in Galt, California.
The business name, and subsequent promotional language included in its slogan “ride the short bus to special beer,” is disgraceful and unacceptable, and is extremely offensive to all people with Down syndrome and other disabilities. Special Ed’s Brewery’s business owners, Ed and Cheryl Mason, received a business license from the City of Galt.
“NDSS maintains a zero tolerance policy against stereotyping, defamation and discrimination against people with Down syndrome. All people with Down syndrome are valued members of society and deserve to be treated with the upmost dignity and respect. Naming and promoting a business to mock a person’s school placement in special education classes or need to take specialized transportation to school is intolerable. I spoke with Mr. Mason this afternoon to express our deep concern, and he apologized. NDSS is asking our advocates to reach out to Mayor Mark Crews to request that the brewery immediately change its name,” said NDSS President Sara Hart Weir.
Weir has also reached out directly to Mayor Mark Crews, the Mayor of Galt, California.
NDSS is calling on our advocates to contact Mayor Mark Crews to express their outrage and ask that the brewery immediately suspend its advertising campaign and take steps to change its name as soon as possible.
